I think it is the appropriate time of year to start this ride up again. As usual, those whom are interested should meet this Sunday, at Cycles De Oro at 1:00 PM. The pace will be a low endurance, recovery type one around 17 mph for 50 miles or so. Of course we will slow up on the up hills and speed down the other side. And there will be the inevitable pee break. Remember we should have averaged about 17 mph by the end of the ride.

Riding off of the front is discouraged and no riders will be dropped. The goal is to have everyone together as much as possible and have a cohesive group of riders. Remember, it's all about having fun and enjoying a Sunday afternoon on a bike amongst friends!

I know the roads north of town reasonably well, and I'll be the first to admit I don't know the roads south well at all. I'll try to have a route planned for these rides, and I encourage those who know the area well to help out with the routes once in awhile to avoid monotony.

If this sounds good to everybody I'll see you this Sunday!

Hey guys! It's Matthew Thomas from Cycles de Oro here. Tomorrow Ashley Powell will be leading out a training ride from Yum Yum's on Spring Garden St., across from UNCG at 9:30 in the morning. Hope you all can make it. I also need Jeremy's phone #. He rides on your team on the Cervelo. I told him an earlier time and I need to contact him.

Here is a description of what we did last week:

Yum Yums, 9:30 Sunday: Following a minimum 30 minutes warm-up out of
town, riders will take turns going solo off the front for exactly five
minutes with approximately 30 seconds of head start. This may be
adjusted slightly for each solo rider in order for the chasers to
close the gap at around 3-5 minutes.

No one should attack in the chase group! If you feel the need to go
harder, it is ok to leave the group if you can do so without
attacking, but in general , each rider should try to keep the chase
group together and not try to split it up by out-riding everyone else.
If the soloist is caught before five minutes, it's wide open. Everyone
should stop working at the five minute mark. If the soloist is still
ahead, he/she should ride back to meet the group. Riders are welcome
to go longer than 5 minutes, though, and they should meet at 1 o'clock
at the shop.

There should be 5-10 minutes rest- depending on the intensity of the
previous effort and how long it takes everyone to regroup - while
everyone rides EASY. This means 10-15 mph on flat ground. No half-
wheeling, no riding ahead. Anyone dropped during the previous effort
should be able to easily catch back up. Riders are welcome to ride
kinda hard the whole time, though, and they should meet at the shop at
1 o'clock.

This should go on for pretty much the entire ride except for just
before the Caraway climb. Everyone should stay together and ride an
easy to medium tempo pace(<21mph) from the last store before the
climb(where we take the left fork) to the bottom of the climb. Once we
reach the bottom of the climb together, it's a race to the top. Some
may choose not to ride the last steep section up to the coul-de-sac.
Everyone will re-group at the store at the bottom of the descent where
we'll try to keep the stop as brief as possible. We'll shoot the
shizzle after we get going, not while sitting outside the store.

For the average Cat 4-1, this ride should be as easy or hard as you
need it to be. If you're having trouble keeping up, no problem, just
sit-in as much as possible- never take a pull, and never take a flyer.
This is perfectly acceptable.

If the group is more than around 10 riders, we may combine riders off
the front, in order to give all willing riders several efforts off the
front.

Cane Creek Time Trial - 7/18/08

20K TT out and back along the French Broad River. It's a slight uphill on the way out. Riders go out every 30 seconds and are sent off in reverse order of when they signed up. It seemed to go smoothly this year. It was warm and humid, but we had no rain.

Poppies Criterium - 7/19/08

This took the place of the Road Race this year. It was a 0.6 mile Crit course in downtown Brevard. The finish was slightly uphill and turns 2 and 3 were pretty tight. They also turned on to pretty narrow streets. A rider in the Masters 50+ went down in turn 2 and the race was stopped while the ambulance loaded him (unconcious) to take him to the hospital. He was air-evac'ed to a neuro unit somewhere and released the following day. He suffered a concussion, clavicle fracture, and a couple of rib fractures. Others went down in that turn but were not seriously injured.

City of Asheville Criterium - 7/20/08

Held in downtown Asheville, this course is triangular in shape and 0.7 miles. The right side of the triangle is the front stretch and is a gentle ascent. The top of the triangle is pretty level. The left side of the triangle is the descent to the bottom of the triangle. The toughest part of this is trying to negotiate the turn with as much momentum as possible so that you can get back on the pedals for the climb up the front stretch. I was pulled from the course last year and wanted to avoid that this year. I managed to finish with the main group (there was one off the front) and with my skin intact. It was a good weekend.

Folks,

We are still short on volunteers to Marshall the course on Saturday. Please, please, please contact Wayne Baucino (wbaucino [at] yahoo.com) if you can help out!

Time Trial - The start times are starting to be posted. Folks will generally go out in their respective Categories with Pro 1,2,3 being the first. The start times are approximations at this point, but you likely won't start BEFORE the start time listed.

I'd also like to encourage all of you to go ahead and sign up for the three events. I don't see any Veloproject folks in the Cat 5 other than me. This is in our back yard and we should have a good showing at this one for our sponsors. Sign up here today:

Hey Guys:

Just thought I would send out an update to the forum regarding my injuries. Went to the Doc yesterday, he says I am healing well. Not much pain, haven't used any pain meds since last Tuesday. Doc is now letting me get out of the sling a little bit, so I am able to type this with both hands. Starting Physical Therapy on Monday and see the Doc again at the end of the month. Probably won't be back on the road before then, depends on the Physical Therapy and how I feel. My goal is to be ready for the Blue Ridge Brutal in mid August. I'm sure I will see all of you at the Peidmont Triad Omnium next week.

Thanks for all of your good wishes.

I arrived at Country Park around 12:30 and just in time to see the finish of the Cat 4 Women's Race. It was great to see Stacy Brown win the sprint and the Gold Medal. Great job, Stacy!

I settled in during the lunch break and then watched the Pro 1,2,3 guys start. The field was almost 50 strong. I left after 3 or 4 laps in order to get my gear ready and warm up. Unfortunately, it started to rain (hail as well) and there were some good lightning flashes. From the cover of a picnic building I watched as the Pro 1,2,3 guys rode in this mess. Ughh. The rain let up and I went out to warm up some.

The Cat 4 guys went out after the rain while I was warming up and apparently had 4, or so, crashes.

Great. Rain. Wet course. Cat 5 + Citizens 18-34 (read "inexperience", mea culpa). Much fear and trembling in the peleton. My plan was to stick on Chip Duckett's wheel for as long as I could and try to stay clear of any mayhem. We made it through the first lap without any issues. Just before the first turn on the second lap some guy goes down mid-peleton and mayhem ensues. I'd guess 12-14 guys made it by. I don't think anyone went down for the rest of that lap, but, on lap 3 when we got to the "Black Forest Bends" on the backside someone slid out and took another rider or two with him. There was at least one more slide out (possibly two) at that turn and some guy went down on the initial hill on the last lap. I was behind him when he went down and popped off the back glad to be able to take my skin home.

It was an ugly day of racing. After the race, Chip Duckett suggested that one of the problems might have been folks getting back on the gas coming through the "Black Forest Bends" and having the rear tire slip as they applied the pressure to the pedals. Whatever the reason, it was one hazardous day. I finished somewhere in the top ten and didn't stick around to see the results.

Congrats to Monty and Stacy!

Monty finished 1st in a field of 62 Cat 4 riders today and apparently no team members to work with him. Impressive!

Stacy Brown finished 3rd in the Cat 4 Women's race. Woo Hoo!

Great job folks!

Greg,

Thanks for the report. That was a fast race indeed.

In the B, a group of 4, including "Fast Frank" Mullins, lapped the field fairly early, and then it was all over but the shouting.

In the last-lap sprint I was about 10th in line on the back stretch. Couple of guys on the inside were slowing considerably and I actually had to dive inside the white line to get around them otherwise bog down. Believe I was 8th in the field sprint, this 12th overall.

The 'C' race was fast and furious tonight. There was a four man break in the second lap that eventually got reeled back in minus one. Some guy proceeded to lap the field SOLO. I was just trying to hang on as folks reeled in the break so I missed the fact someone was off the front. He came around on the inside about 12 minutes in yelling 'inside' and flying by. He got back on the front but couldn't shake the field the second time. Nonetheless, he stayed on the front for most of the rest of the race. The field averaged 25.1 mph. Who knows how much the winner averaged? Jim Caragol and I finished with the field somewhere in the top 10, but humbled.

Randy Smith was at the 'B' race and will have to give you details for it.

There were several VP kits at Mitchell, so please share your stories here.

0630 Start. Fair. Temp 78 degrees.

The pace of the large lead group for the first hour was 22 mph. The large group made for an interesting yo-yo effect that caused one rider I witnessed to brake and go down in the left lane around mile four. Once the patrol car escort left us the pace picked up and we were averaging around 23.4 mph by the time we came to the road the DOT had picked to pave that day. The 16 minute delay was not welcome.

The heat started to get pretty bad by about 11 am. A good many people suffered cramps while riding and there were more folks stopped at the rest stops than I remember seeing in a long while. Bugs. There were midges everywhere on Mitchell. My arms looked like I had pepper sprinkled on them when I was done.

I finished just under 7 hours and was glad to be done. I hope the other VP folks had a decent day!

Hello All, because of the high heat forecast for Saturday the start time is changed to 7 AM. We'll be pedaling out of Oak Ridge Elementary at 7 to Sauratown and Hanging Rock, approx 88 mi. Also I figure on possibly/probably 4 stops, Moratock Park ( approx 35mi ), Hanging Rock Visitor's Center ( approx 55mi ), the little store in Meadows ( approx 65mi ) and the Citgo in Walnut Cove ( approx 73mi ). On the way up, when we get to Moratock, we'll pow wow and se how everyone's doing with the heat and decide if we need to make a route change.
