Cane Creek Time Trial - 7/18/08

20K TT out and back along the French Broad River. It's a slight uphill on the way out. Riders go out every 30 seconds and are sent off in reverse order of when they signed up. It seemed to go smoothly this year. It was warm and humid, but we had no rain.

Poppies Criterium - 7/19/08

This took the place of the Road Race this year. It was a 0.6 mile Crit course in downtown Brevard. The finish was slightly uphill and turns 2 and 3 were pretty tight. They also turned on to pretty narrow streets. A rider in the Masters 50+ went down in turn 2 and the race was stopped while the ambulance loaded him (unconcious) to take him to the hospital. He was air-evac'ed to a neuro unit somewhere and released the following day. He suffered a concussion, clavicle fracture, and a couple of rib fractures. Others went down in that turn but were not seriously injured.

City of Asheville Criterium - 7/20/08

Held in downtown Asheville, this course is triangular in shape and 0.7 miles. The right side of the triangle is the front stretch and is a gentle ascent. The top of the triangle is pretty level. The left side of the triangle is the descent to the bottom of the triangle. The toughest part of this is trying to negotiate the turn with as much momentum as possible so that you can get back on the pedals for the climb up the front stretch. I was pulled from the course last year and wanted to avoid that this year. I managed to finish with the main group (there was one off the front) and with my skin intact. It was a good weekend.

I'll be up at our mountain cabin, which I believe is about 1.5 hours from the locations where the RR and crit used to be. I won't get up there until Friday night, so obviously won't do the TT. I won't do the crit in Brevard. But if the crit in downtown Asheville is on Saturday, I might do that.

Hey Guys:

Just thought I would send out an update to the forum regarding my injuries. Went to the Doc yesterday, he says I am healing well. Not much pain, haven't used any pain meds since last Tuesday. Doc is now letting me get out of the sling a little bit, so I am able to type this with both hands. Starting Physical Therapy on Monday and see the Doc again at the end of the month. Probably won't be back on the road before then, depends on the Physical Therapy and how I feel. My goal is to be ready for the Blue Ridge Brutal in mid August. I'm sure I will see all of you at the Peidmont Triad Omnium next week.

Thanks for all of your good wishes.

I arrived at Country Park around 12:30 and just in time to see the finish of the Cat 4 Women's Race. It was great to see Stacy Brown win the sprint and the Gold Medal. Great job, Stacy!

I settled in during the lunch break and then watched the Pro 1,2,3 guys start. The field was almost 50 strong. I left after 3 or 4 laps in order to get my gear ready and warm up. Unfortunately, it started to rain (hail as well) and there were some good lightning flashes. From the cover of a picnic building I watched as the Pro 1,2,3 guys rode in this mess. Ughh. The rain let up and I went out to warm up some.

The Cat 4 guys went out after the rain while I was warming up and apparently had 4, or so, crashes.

Great. Rain. Wet course. Cat 5 + Citizens 18-34 (read "inexperience", mea culpa). Much fear and trembling in the peleton. My plan was to stick on Chip Duckett's wheel for as long as I could and try to stay clear of any mayhem. We made it through the first lap without any issues. Just before the first turn on the second lap some guy goes down mid-peleton and mayhem ensues. I'd guess 12-14 guys made it by. I don't think anyone went down for the rest of that lap, but, on lap 3 when we got to the "Black Forest Bends" on the backside someone slid out and took another rider or two with him. There was at least one more slide out (possibly two) at that turn and some guy went down on the initial hill on the last lap. I was behind him when he went down and popped off the back glad to be able to take my skin home.

It was an ugly day of racing. After the race, Chip Duckett suggested that one of the problems might have been folks getting back on the gas coming through the "Black Forest Bends" and having the rear tire slip as they applied the pressure to the pedals. Whatever the reason, it was one hazardous day. I finished somewhere in the top ten and didn't stick around to see the results.

Thanks for the report. That was a fast race indeed.

In the B, a group of 4, including "Fast Frank" Mullins, lapped the field fairly early, and then it was all over but the shouting.

In the last-lap sprint I was about 10th in line on the back stretch. Couple of guys on the inside were slowing considerably and I actually had to dive inside the white line to get around them otherwise bog down. Believe I was 8th in the field sprint, this 12th overall.

The 'C' race was fast and furious tonight. There was a four man break in the second lap that eventually got reeled back in minus one. Some guy proceeded to lap the field SOLO. I was just trying to hang on as folks reeled in the break so I missed the fact someone was off the front. He came around on the inside about 12 minutes in yelling 'inside' and flying by. He got back on the front but couldn't shake the field the second time. Nonetheless, he stayed on the front for most of the rest of the race. The field averaged 25.1 mph. Who knows how much the winner averaged? Jim Caragol and I finished with the field somewhere in the top 10, but humbled.

Congratulations to all the racers that participated in the Rock Hill Omnium. VeloProject.com was well represented by Monty Stout, Bill Rabley, Dave Stephens, Stacy Brown, Randy Smith, and Wayne Baucino. Monty was second overall in the Omnium, with second in the Sprints, second in the Road Race, and second in the Crit. Dave Stephens won the Omnium with a 1st place in the Sprints and Crit, and a second in the Road Race. Bill Rabley was right behind Dave in second overall. Randy braved torrential rains to ride the Crit, and wins the most insane rider award. I don't know how I did overall, but I finished 5th in the Crit, 4th in the Road Race, and 7th (dead last) in the Sprints. I guess I'll have to start working on that.

Folks, went down tonight after the Dixie 'C' Race. I was just cooling down talking with a buddy and unfortunately let my concentration lapse as we came to the chicane. Broke the right clavicle distally. Damn! It's fairly well approximated so it should heal with a little time. Finished 5th in a field of 12. New Ionos trashed in maiden ride. Arghhh!!!!!

What this means for the team:

1. I am already registered for the Charlotte TT Series and I would hope that Bill can get my registration transferred so someone on the team can use it.

2. I have a 56cm Motobecane Nemesis TT bike that I built up last Winter that I EXPECT one of you to use. It's not top of the line stuff, but it's serviceable.

3. I have a medium Team Skinsuit (never opened), shoe covers, and a Louis Garneau Rocket TT helmet that someone is welcome to use as well.

The first TT is April 9th. It will help me heal faster to know someone in the club is benefitting from my misfortune. Don't be shy!!! Come get this bike, get fit to it, practice a time or two, then go represent our club in Charlotte! I won't be able to use the TT bike for at least 2 months.

Bill needs to know that I probably won't be able to help with setup/takedown in Charlotte for a while.

Greg

BTW, you got spared the longer version because the wireless failed when I tried to post the first edition and my left-handed typing skills at 0300 are fading fast.

We all like success. Winning rules! I think success can be easier and more fun to achieve working together as a team. We have a lot of strong riders in Cat 5, if we can get organized and work some strategies VeloProject.com could make a name for itself. JB is stuck in the <35, rules don't allow him to race 35+. Another thing I have noticed is the top ranked Cat 5 guys are almost always 35+ despite the age group penalty, so in theory, it should be easier to win in a <35 group and as a bonus you don't get age group penalty points.

Gents,

It looks like we may get enough of a break in the weather to do the Dixie Classic Series today. While I've raced at Ace, I've never done the Dixie Classic thing. Is there anything particular to be careful of? Anybody else planning on going tonight?

The full kit is laid out and waiting....Time to show for our sponsors....

Monty,

That's OK for Cat 1-4, but does it really matter for Cat 5?

I'm going to enjoy one full season of Cat 5 racing before I plan to move up after the Carolina's Cup.

I'd like to experience a little more success (like you did) before making the move to 4.

Actually USCF/USA Cycling rules allow you to race a lower age group down to the group that includes 19-34 year olds. Likewise Juniors can race a higher age group up to the group that includes 19-34 year olds. All age groups that exclude 19-34 year olds receive penalty points (ranking points). So if you were to race the Cat 5 <35 you would save yourself 25 penalty points over racing the Cat 5 35+.
